There are three main areas to choose from when booking a hotel in Rome. Near the Vatican (on the other side of the Tiber), near Piazza Del Popolo or near Termini. If you choose to book through airBnB, rather than a hotel, you will have many more options in more exciting areas of town, like Piazza Navona, without paying a high premium.
The area beneath Piazza Del Popolo is a good compromise between value and location. Via Del Corso is a pedestrianized street that cuts through some of the best sights in Rome, like the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon. It’s very easy to enjoy the Roman nightlife and leisurely stroll back to your hotel if you stay within this area.
Rome charges a per-person tourist tax which is not included in your hotel bill and is always paid in person at the end of your stay. These range from 3-6 euros a night depending on whether you are in a 1-5 star hotel.
Here are some hotels we recommend in Rome:
Hotel Valadier is a four star luxury hotel near the Piazza Del Popolo. The hotel has a rooftop restaurant, piano bar and gym.
There is a promotional rate on their website for 5-night stays but it is non-refundable and cannot be cancelled.
Prices start at €210/night.
Hotel Incentrum is an "apartment" hotel located very near the Piazza Del Popolo. Apartment hotels do not have hotel amenities like breakfasts, gyms or 24 hour front desks, but their rooms are just as nice and sometimes offer added benefits like efficiency kitchens. Their prices are also much more affordable. John and I have stayed at Incentrum and really enjoyed it.
Prices start at €120/night.
AirBnB offers a fantastic selection of apartments to rent in Rome. It's better value than staying in a hotel and allows you to experience the city on a more personal level. If you're using AirBnB for the first time, make sure you search for "entire home" and designate the number of guests staying with you. Most "hosts" prefer to exchange messages before confirming your booking, but those listed as "instant book" will accept your booking immediately. If you're nervous, stay with a "superhost".
Prices start at €80/night.
Hotel Diplomatic is a three star hotel located on the Vatican side of the Tiber river. It's centrally located and only a 10 minute walk to either Piazza Navona or Piazza di Spagna.
Prices start at €135/night.
